The year 2014 begins with strange news for the inhabitants of Strackholt: A small group of Eritrean refugees has stranded in the village. 20 km from Aurich, in the middle of the East Frisian emptiness, the newcomers are expected to await the outcome of their asylum procedure. Helmut, a retired school principal and Christiane, a journalist, take on the five men. With German lessons, office walks and home-baked cake, they try to make it easier for them to start afresh in a foreign environment. The refugees accept the offer of help with great vigor. But with each day new conflicts arise, because the mills of the authorities grind slowly and the daily uncertainty consumes the nerves of all involved.
